چکیده

Recent measurements of packet networks have shown that packet tra c exhibits long-range-dependent property. Studies have also discovered that this property is not adequately captured by the conventional Markov tra c models and often yields queueing behavior such as heavy-tailed or subexponential queue length distribution. These ndings have led to the implication that long-range-dependent tra c has a signi cant impact on determining queueing performance and dimensioning bu er requirement in general. This paper examines the impact of long-range-dependent tra c on providing connectionless services over ATM networks using AAL5 protocol. As connectionless data packets enter an ATM network, they are encapsulated into AAL5 frames. Within the ATM network, AAL5 frames are segmented into cells for transmission and reassembled at intermediate connectionless servers for frame switching. A queueing model characterizing the AAL5 frame reassembly operation is developed and analyzed to investigate the impact of long-range-dependent tra c on dimensioning the frame reassembly bu er. The bu er over ow probability is analytically derived. Tight upper bound and lower bound of the AAL5 frame loss probability are also established. The analysis shows that long-range-dependent tra c and conventional Markovian tra c yield similar queueing behavior in the frame reassembly operation.

Analysis of shared buer switches under non-uniform trac pattern and global ̄ow control

Shared bu€er switches do not su€er from head of line blocking which is a common problem in simple input bu€ering. Shared bu€er switches have previously been studied under uniform and unbalanced trac patterns. However, due to the complexity of the model, it was not possible to fully explore the performance of such a switch, in the presence of a single hot spot. In this paper, we develop a new m...

Upstream tra c multiplexing in photonic ATM access networks

For the future development of residential broadband telecommunication services the present access infrastructure must be upgraded. Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) optical networks, though still expensive today, appear to be a future-proof solution. FTTH networks based on passive optical Remote Nodes (RN) and supporting ATM switching (ATM-PONs) have been demonstrated and are going to be standardized. I...

Conservation Relations for Fully Shared ATM Bu ers

In ATM networks, bu ering is required to reduce cell loss and increase bandwidth utilization by the bursty tra c. Several types of tra c with di erent performance requirements on delay and loss will share bu er resources. We focus on the fully shared bu er with push-out and a randomized service priority rule. Some conservation relations are obtained which can be used to tune the parameters of t...

Bu er Sharing in Shared Memory ATM Systems With Space Priority Tra c

In this paper we study the problem of the optimal design of bu er management policies for a shared memory ATM switch or demultiplexer fed by tra c containing two different space priorities. We present the properties of the optimal policy within the class of pushout and expelling policies that minimizes total weighted cell loss. A numerical study of the optimal policies for small bu er sizes bas...
